26 May 2010: Lyndhaven - Meeting Notes, Annual General Meeting - 22 May 10

Lyndhaven Annual General Meeting, held 22 May 2010 at Harper's Hall in Jacksonville, NB

Shire Attendees:

Observing: Andreiko of Carolingia

Meeting was called to order at 1610 hrs.

There were no old minutes to review.

There was no old business to conduct.

Office Budgets:

Tali'a moved that $50 be set aside to provide loaner tabards for fighters with armour which does not meet the new society standards for authenticity. The motion was seconded by Snarfi. There was some discussion, in particular who holds the tabards, and how do we account for them. It was determined that the marshals should each have some, and they should loan them out and get them back at each practice or event. The marshals would then add their current number of loaner tabards to their marshal's report, copied to the seneschal. The motion was carried as amended.

Conogan moved that the pursuivant's office should have a $20 budget for postage, envelopes, etc. It was seconded by Snarfi. The motion was carried.

Inga moved that the chatelain's office should have $25 for purchasing loaner feast gear. It was seconded by Snarfi. After some discussion on where to buy such things for so little money, the motion was carried.

Conogan moved that the MoL office should have a $20 budget for postage, envelopes, etc. It was seconded by Snarfi. The motion was carried.

Henry moved that $35 be paid for the hosting fee for the Lyndhaven website. Mariota seconded. Motion carried.

Jacquelle moved that up to $75 be used to buy loaner archery equipment. Aethelwulf seconded. Motion carried.

Election of Officers:

New Business:

Tali'a brought forth the idea of items to wear (like a baldric) for shire members when they travel to events. This discussion lead to discussion about a shire badge. everyone agreed to table the discussion, but the shire badge idea would be taken up by the pursuivant. There are currently 28 paid members of the shire.

There was a straw poll to see if the shire membership was interested in pursuing the idea of creating Lyndhaven a barony. There was much positive discussion about its merits and drawbacks, and the minimum requirements as set forth in East Kingdom law. Although we had more than the minimum number of paid memberships, it was not by a comfortable margin. Also, this lead to a discussion about required officers for a barony.

Henry started a discussion about the requirement to have a chronicler as well as a webmaster for a barony. Although Mariota took over as the chronicler, the position had been vacant for some time, and it would require some work and coordination to re-establish the Lyndhaven Leaflet. Henry suggested much of its content could be generated by our on-line utility we have for a "newsletter on demand". The additional required content for a newsletter could then be added, since some items cannot be kept on a web page. Then the newsletter could be distributed to shire members and sent to the kingdom.

Inga started a discussion about the requirements for having photos of people doing SCA activities on our website. There was talk of signed photo releases, etc., and it was agreed we needed to move on that to get photos on our website.

Snarfi moved to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Mariota, and the motion carried.

The meeting adjourned at 1650 hrs.

We had two events during the first quarter with some new interest from 7 people

We also had a demo at the Fredericton Highland games. We were placed close to the area set aside for children. Once we started a circle dance with about 8 Scadians, by the time the dance ended we had over 30 people in the circle...Lots of fun.

We have a teacher in Salisbury who has contacted me and would like to work at including a demo to include in her class on medieval life for this years’ grade 5 class.

The Shire of Lyndhaven has been very busy with smaller activities. These activities have been spread out throughout the Shire. We have had a Carnival, Feasts, Archery, Heavy practice, Fencing, A&S days and we have had numerous music and dancing evenings.

I was not in attendance at some of these activities, but from reports from my deputies we extended a welcome to approx 18 new people.

Many of those in the Shire have been very active in letting people know who we are and what we do. I have to tip my hat to the people in Lyndhaven, for they really have been making newcomers feel welcome and included.

Comments:

The finances of Crown Tourney were audited by the Kingdom Seneschal at Pennsic. There were no anomalies.

I would like to thank our Exchequor and our MoL for the many extra hours that they were forced into contributing as a result of this demand for an audit.

Concerns:

The audit was prompted by a tipster (known to the Crown, but not identified to the Kingdom Seneschal), reportedly spreading a rumour that had had no basis in fact. The issue at question concerned expenditures for food and could have been explained had anyone simply asked. I (as Seneschal) was not asked. The autocrat was not asked. The Exchequor was not asked. The regional Seneschal was not asked. The regional Exchequor was not asked. The Kingdom Seneschal was not asked. The Kingdom Exchequor was not asked. Whoever sent this volly had the ear of the King and/or Queen, access to them and a sufficiency of their trust that they would not discount the report out of hand. This person went over the heads of everyone who could have simply answered the question and took it straight to the Crown. This is not the action of someone concerned for accuracy of reporting, but is the cowardly act of someone who abused their personal position of trust to create chaos and sow the seeds of distrust in Lyndhaven.

This trouble, combined with various other issues (most notably defamation of character posts on certain e-mail lists), have led me to consider the possibility that our Shire is under systematic attack by a party or parties unknown.

The result of these attacks has been a creeping paralysis caused by fear. By way of example: it was very difficult getting approval for our most recent event because people were afraid that any action we took could be twisted around, again, and used to hurt us.

This situation is not acceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.

All I can do, here in Lyndhaven, is to try and repair the damage that has already been caused and to attempt to limit the damage of further attacks. I need the support of both the Regional and Kingdom Seneschals to help me keep the fallout from these attacks from destroying our Shire.

Plans for the future:

In addition to our traditional events, we're actively considering a couple of specific events with the following themes:

08 Oct 2008: Lyndhaven - Chatelaine report, Oct 2008

From: marciakgreen@hotmail.com
To: chatelaine@eastkingdom.org
Subject: Lyndhaven Report
Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2008 14:27:27 0000

Greetings to you: I am sending this to let you know that the Shire of Lyndhaven has had only one event over the past three months, and at that one event no new comers had attended. This, however has been a busy time for me, as I have been printing up the approved handouts and flyers and have been contacted by two people who have shown an interest in the group. I have also been working on a new event for next year, and have been encouraging others in the Shire to hold more regular events, practices and activities so that new people and those who are feeling separated can have a place to be active. That is all for this reporting period.

09 Sep 2008: Lyndhaven - MOAS report, Sep 2008

SHIRE OF LYNDHAVEN
QUARTERLY REPORT FOR 01 SEPTEMBER 2008
(submitted 09 September 2008)

Preface

I must begin, once again, by stating how impressed I am at everyone’s activity both at events and on their own. Although this report will be very short compared to the last one, that does not mean that activity has slowed down that much. Another factor is that it is summer time which is time spent travelling or with family and friends.

There have also been members from our Shire who have travelled so far as to attend Pennsic, GNEW, Mid-Summer’s at TIR, Small Brawl, etc. I hear that all events were marvelous, as can be expected.

Some of the responses I did get are included below, from individuals’ efforts throughout the last quarter:

From Lady Griet:

"Sadly, not much to report this time around ... still occasionally working on persona studies (namely the very plausible life of a woman during the golden age of Antwerpen), including a little food exploration in recreating the Dutch pancakes found in late/post period art and an attempt at reconstructing "pottagie van rys" from a period grocery bill and other documentation. Have also played with medieval Arabic foods including a fairly tasty ingredient called kishk that I made up from scratch from period instruction. That was kinda fun!

"At GNEW, I was a cold drinks serving girl, made some too ... made from period syrups such as Basil, Rose, Orange, Apple, Pomegranate, Simple Sekanjabin, Lavender, lemon and the like. I also learned a bit about cleaning pewter tokens. Not sure that’s A&S but after nearly 300 of them am sure to be skilled in that area for future applications!"

From Lady Inga and Lord Snarfi Snorrinsen:

"I am working on a painted box for the Shire Championship as well as trying my hand at medieval cookery, which will double as the day board for the Shire Championship. Snarfi is working on building a wooden chest. Erik Snarfison is starting research on Roman shields, with the plan of reproducing one."

From Lord Conogan and Lady Mariota:

"For your A&S Report, you can include that Darlene and I started a batch of red wine from Concord Grapes. No kit, this time! I have also finished painting my device on my shield."

Plans for Next Quarter

Coming up on September 27, the Shire Championships will be held at Lyndsay Valley Lodge at CFB Gagetown, Oromocto, New Brunswick. This promises to be a very busy and fun day for all! Plans are going along quite smoothly.

Thank you all for your time.

Ciao,

ANY ADDITIONAL NOTES, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, CHANGES, ETC.:

Comments:

We have reviewed and modified our operating procedures. Biggest changes: we now hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) where officers are selected, budgets ratified and policies established. Overall, the changes affect only the mundane side of the operations and have been liberally taken from "Parliamentary Procedure at a Glance" by O. Garfield Jones, which is a condensation of Robert's Rules for small clubs and organizations. The entire text of the new policies may be found at http://www.eastkingdom.info/lyndhaven/files/seneschal/shire_policy.html

Concerns:

The finances of Crown Tourney are being audited. I'll be carrying copies of all paperwork with me to the War. I am unsure of what has prompted this and look forward to a quick resolution.

Plans for the future:

We've been considering events with the following themes:

25 Jun 2008: Lyndhaven - MOAS report, Jun 2008

SHIRE OF LYNDHAVEN
QUARTERLY REPORT FOR 01 JUNE 2008
(submitted 30 June 2008)

Preface

I must begin by begging your forgiveness for getting this report off past the due date of 01 June 08. Being very new to the SCA (since September 2007) and even newer at this post (Mistress of Arts & Science – May 2008), I am still on a very sharp learning curve of what is expected in my post as well as what I should do for a report.

Spring Schola

Speaking of Spring Schola (17 May 2008 at Lindsey Valley), was exceptionally well done. All classes ran as expected and everyone who attended seemed to be very pleased with the instruction they received at various posts. From the drawing, beasts of heraldry, herald-ing, history of the tunic, dance lessons and, of course, operating the trebuchet, knowledge was shared by the various instructors and appreciated by the recipients. This was followed by a very nice (and filling) feast of many dishes, of which the “Split Nuns” were my particular favourite. Who would have thought that nutmeg and savory would go together so well with egg yolk?

Individual sources

That being said, I decided to canvas the local blog-spots for input for this report. In doing so, I have received many and great projects that people are engaged in. I have been extremely fascinated at the dedication of these people to their crafts, whatever they may be (fighters included!) and at how intensely they concentrate on genuine re-enactment and at the length and breadth they will go to ensure period ethnicity.

The following paragraphs are quotes from emails I have received to this request, with others coming in daily.

From Lord Conogan mab Rioc, the Breton:

“Here are the projects I have on the go, or recently completed: Heraldic shield tree; “ ‘love song’ for Margaret at the Wood; boiled leather vambraces (armour); and general armour repair.”

From Lady Katinka:

“We had a great turnout of the Ruantallan Chapter of Athena’s Thimble guild in my home last month. We had 4 members from Ruantallan attend, 4 from the Woodstock/Oromocto area and there were about 4 from an Crioch Cala (Moncton). We discussed possibilities of starting a regular meeting rotating to different homes over the next several months starting in September. We are looking into making banners and gonfalons as an embroidery project for a pictorial archive of our Shire of Lyndhaven. We want to work on Shire items once every two months together. Once a month on local area projects, and once a week on personal projects. We haven’t been in contact as of yet as to which projects we’ll be putting our hands and heads to for the Shire and local are projects. We have a few ideas, but we’re looking forward to scheduling our first meeting in September.”

From Lady Griet:

“Well, I’m not sure what you need or from what point...I have been further researching life in early/mid 16th century in Antwerp and occasionally posting some of my stuff in some online forums. I also transcribed an early 16th century book, ‘The Orders of Hospitals’ and have it available in at least one blog. As for building stuff, am currently building/rebuilding a better model for early/mid 16th century clothes in the Brabant area. Not quite medieval, the back yard is going through the process of building a brick oven and a 16th century style rangetop. A slow process however as my supplies are limited. I do hope to have it done before too long! The feast for crown was also a research project from use of humours and eating customs and menu items from 16th century Germany. The ravioli made for the last event in the Shire (Schola) was also an item period to 16th century Germany and was also done from direct transcription/translation (though those parts were done by someone else). The recipe being for two types of ravioli (one ending up vegetarian and other not).

Lately, I have not been making soap, but as usual, am always available for instruction/troubleshooting etc. I hope to be available for instruction in other areas (depending on supply) in the future, such as period sausage making, cheese making etc., and other types of hands-on classes.

I also have a main website (though have been willfully neglecting it for some time) with some past projects and bits connected to it: www.thecompendium.info”

From Lord Hew of K:

Hew's Lawn Labyrinth

http://www.northernelectric.ca/medieval/labyrinth/labyrinth.htm

From Lady Inga:

During the Midsummer Event in Smithwick, I had a brief conversation with Lady Inga. She told me that she is currently researching and making medieval toys and games. Being an Early Child Educator in mundane practice, she is interested in seeing what activities the little ones had during the medieval period.

Conclusion

Well, this is it for my first report as the Shire’s new MoA&S, 2008. I certainly hope that this is sufficient for now as I canvassed the groups late and only waited for a week for responses. My sincerest apologies for the late start and late report (due June 1). I will make sure that I put out the notice a little sooner next quarter and hope to be able to bring you more exciting projects that the Good Gentles in our Shire are working on.

I remain continually impressed with what they are achieving and have learned many things in just doing this one report. We have an extremely talented group that exude great enthusiasm for their passions which is quite contagious – which is an excellent thing!

Vivant!

Yours sincerely,

Pani Danuska

Comments:

We have reworked our web presence. On the current site, our web minister is now responsible for the site framework, but individual officers will be maintaining content, directly. This will include a long-term "chronicle", maintained by our Chronicler and Seneschal.

Concerns:

None at this time.

Plans for the future:

As reported previously, our operating documents need an overhaul. Nothing too drastic (I hope) but there are a few spots that would benefit from being changed to describe how we actually run the Shire at present. I have a draft ready and will be presenting it to the Shire "real soon now"(tm), probably at the general meeting in May.

Report for April 10, 2008

At the moment, our Shire is preparing for crown tourney, so gold key is being collected and catalogued. More handouts have been given out to interested parties and information sent over the internet to another interested party. (*mostly I have been hand painting 350 tokens, so it hasn’t left me a lot of time for much else…)

Report on Preparations for Crown Tourney

Conogan, the autocrat, gave a brief report on the preparations for Crown Tourney as follows:

The planning for spring crown is continuing apace. The shield tree was assembled today (thanks Doccia) with its cross members and looked quite impressive. It went up in about 40 seconds.

Also, I have a "99% sure" note from the base RSM's office that we can have stanchions and cordon rope delivered to J7 for our use. They will let me know tomorrow or Friday.

Also, due to the lack of minors attending, and volunteer shortage, we won't have any organized children's activities. There were only 15 minors at last count, and many were teenagers.

That's about it to report for now, except that everyone is looking forward to attending!

PayPal

It was brought up to investigate whether we could use PayPal to ease the troubles of accepting reservations for far away.

Tabled.

ANY ADDITIONAL NOTES, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, CHANGES, ETC.:

Comments:

Our books are now all sorted out and reports covering the past few years have been submitted. Nothing terrible was found: only simple neglect. Again I feel the need to lavish praise on our exchequer, Lady Moriath, for her perseverance and professionalism.

On a less happy note, my comment in my previous report concerning the reporting from War Camp was overly optimistic. Although a draft event report was made available to me in time for the report, it was nearly three months later, and after the intervention of the regional exchequer, before the autocrat turned over the receipts, money and paperwork to the exchequer. They arrived in sufficient disarray as to preclude the likelihood of accurate reconciliation.

I have no reason to believe that there was either malice or dishonesty in her dealings... only carelessness. Despite this, due to what appears to be a personal failing in the area of handling money, I recommend to future seneschals that Gina Stairs would be unsuitable as an event autocrat in the future.

Concerns:

None, at the moment.

Plans for the future:

Our operating documents need an overhaul. Nothing too drastic (I hope) but there are a few spots that would benefit from being changed to describe how we actually run the Shire at present.

ANY ADDITIONAL NOTES, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, CHANGES, ETC.:

Comments:

I commend our exchequor on the long hours that she has put into her job.

Concerns:

We are still in the process of sorting out the books. Apparently, no reports were filed from 2006 to present. Our exchequor has nearly completed her forensic analysis of our books and expects to be able to issue a full report by the end of July 2007. Freya and Molly are both in the loop on this one.

The good news is that I haven't been informed of there being any money missing. It just appears to be a matter of long-term neglect of the books.

The "current balance" (above) may not be accurately reflective of our current financial position. It is simply the entry at the bottom of the ledger and does not account for:

The tardiness of the war camp autocrat has been so extreme and the event report, when finally submitted, was so filled with errors that I would be hesitant, at this time, to endorse her as autocrat for any future events.

Plans for the future:

Our operating documents need an overhaul. Nothing too drastic (I hope) but there are a few spots that would benefit from being changed to describe how we actually run the Shire at present.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:22pm

Secretary's notes:

Minutes of Shire of Lyndhaven Populous Meeting Held at Northern Shores War Camp, 19 May 2007 (titles have not been used for names)

The Chair called the meeting to order at 1905 hrs.

The agenda for the meeting was the review of the fiscal budgets submitted by the shire's curia officers for recurring expenses.

The shire exchequor, Moriath, stated the shire's finances are in good order, with a bank balance of $3350.49.

She had not yet spoken to the autocrat of the war camp for a final tally of that event.

The Chair read the proposed budget, and explained that officer monthly budgets do not roll over from one month to the next. Curia must approve more than the stated amounts given any particular month. The budgets for 2007-2008 were:

Aetheric suggested adopting a policy of $5 per officer per month. It was explained that officers could always bring expenditures to curia meetings if they were willing to risk the small amounts. The $20 / month were for the exchequor and the Minister of Lists, mostly for expected recurring postage and photocopying expenses.

Isard moved to adopt the budget.
Liz seconded the motion.
The ayes carried the motion.

The Chair opened the floor to new business.

Conogan mentioned that the on-line meetings were a convenient and economical way of bringing the curia together to deal with on-going business.

There was nothing further.

No date was set for the next shire meeting.

Moriath moved to adjourn the meeting.
It was seconded and carried.

The meeting closed at 1922 hrs.

27 Jan 07, MAC potluck (no) (non-SCA)

31 Mar 07, Feast of Fools (no Pikestaff, heavily publicized via the web)

I've included non-SCA events in my event list. Medieval Anachronists Club (MAC) events are hosted by a military base club at CFB Gagetown. The event was open to all SCA people, not just MAC club members. No SCA funds were used. The event was publicized on our Shire e-mail list and was run by the customs and demeanor that we expect of SCA events.

This past March, we held the fifth annual "Feast of Fools", the first fully official Lyndhaven event in the Fredericton area in about five years. Well attended, well received, very successful.

Also, a display was held in conjunction with Heritage week at the L.P. Fisher Public Library in Woodstock, NB and lasted for 2 weeks.

EVENTS/DEMOS PLANNED:

May 21, Spring Schola and Northern Shores Region Warcamp (big camping event)

Demo at "Gathering of the Scots" festival in Perth Andover on the last weekend in May.

We are looking at the possibility of having a Demo at Base Gagetown, Oromocto during their yearly base club demo weekend.

ANY ADDITIONAL NOTES, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, CHANGES, ETC.:

Comments:

The Shire is beginning to show signs of recovery. Officer meetings are very orderly and business is getting done smoothly and with enthusiasm and positive input from all of the officers.

The Shire books have finally gotten to our exchequor, who is in the process of doing a forensic analysis of their contents. For that and other reasons, the exchequor's reports have been tardy, but this has been with the understanding, permission and support of our regional exchequor.

The stealth officer in the Moncton area has broken cover and is now listed as the KM in this report.

More and more of our administrative support structure is being migrated to the internet with notable success. Where officers had been unable to meet due to travel problems in the past, we now meet and communicate regularly via the 'net. Event proposal packages, budgets and reports are also on-line. This is having a very positive effect on the day-to-day running of the branch.

Concerns:

Nothing pressing at the moment, I'm glad to say.

Plans for the future:

The plans outlined in my previous report are still, for the most part, valid. Work towards their implementation continues apace.

One additional note: most of the internet server space being used for Shire infrastructure support is not on "lyndhaven.org", due to that server being limited in nature. We are working towards moving our web content to a better server, at which point we should be able to migrate our infrastructure.

01 Apr 2007: Lyndhaven - Chatelaine report, Apr 2007

Report for April 10th

  1. A contact list was compiled and info packages were sent out to prospective members.
  2. Brochure design is almost complete and will be produced to place in library, grocery stores, etc…
  3. Plans for a Demo to be held at the "Gathering of the Scots" Festival in Perth Andover, NB on the last weekend in May are in the works. One of my deputy chatelaines, Cat of Lenox (Cindy Hachey) is in contact with the organizer of this event.
  4. A display was held in conjunction with Heritage week at the L.P. Fisher Public Library in Woodstock, NB and lasted for 2 weeks. A variety of items and pictures were displayed and two new names were added to the contact list.
  5. We’ve received two donations of fabric and will be working on making new loaner garb for the Gold Key. I will be approaching curia with the "Grow Atlantia" document to see if our shire can implement some of the suggestions.
  6. We are looking at the possibility of having a Demo at Base Gagetown, Oromocto during their yearly base club demo weekend. Will be discussing it with our Senechal.
  7. Owen Flewelling (Lord Llewellyn Ap Olwyn) is working on a short movie/power point type presentation on the laptop for the May Demo.

MoAS report for Shire of Lyndhaven
Date Filed: February 28, 2007

Greetings Mistress Gwen!

There isn't much to report of here in our little shire.

Moncton area - not much to speak of

Fredericton/Oromocto/Gagetown - a group of them are working on banners, favours, and armour (enough for 7 people to be on the field at NSR warcamp in May)

Woodstock - We have recently put together an A&S display at the local library to showcase our talents.

We will be hosting the NSR Warcamp in May that will also play host to our annual Spring Schola. I have a list at the moment of about 5-10 teachers of various classes.

That is my report for now.

I don't believe this state of affairs to be the fault of previous officers, and it would be an exaggeration to say that the Shire is currently "sick", but this slate of officers has inherited a situation that requires a proactive stance if we are to bring the shire back to a state of vibrancy. This may almost certainly entail making uncomfortable changes to the status quo, much of it in our operating policies and procedures. It is my intent to develop and implement these changes with the input and assistance of the shire as a whole (see "Plans", below).

I have regular communication with the Shire officers, which is a good thing. There is a large portion of our population that lives in the Moncton area, and there are no officers in the current slate who are from there, which is a not-good thing. The one person in the Moncton area who may (or may not) be an officer of the Shire (purportedly the Knight Marshal) has not replied to e-mail that I have sent him, so I have been unable to confirm his status.

Other than that last, we now have a darned fine team of officers in Lyndhaven and I have every confidence in them.

Concerns:

The previous exchequor has still not yielded the books. The current exchequor has escalated the issue to me and I'm keeping the regional Seneschal in the loop. I have reached the conclusion that I'm going to have to drive to her place sometime in the next couple of weeks to pick up the books (a round trip of about 200 miles).

Plans for the future:

I wish there was a single cure-all for our ills but, alas, it is not so. There are, however, a couple of things that I believe need to be addressed in the near future:

It is my hope that we can have a draft of a new Shire "Policies & Procedures" document finished and published in time for a month of comments and changes prior to placing it before a general meeting in May.

01 Jan 2007: Lyndhaven - Chatelaine report, Jan 2007

  1. A contact list is being compiled and in January, each person on the list will receive a packet containing the pamphlet “Forward Into the Past”, and other relevant contact info.
  2. I am working on designing a brochure to place in the library, grocery stores, etc…
  3. I am working with the Arts and Science minister and another member (Bob Waller/Snarfi Snorison) to start monthly interactive novice arts and science classes, so that prospective members will have an opportunity to immediately experience some SCA activity, as well as a project that they can take home with them to help develop their persona.
  4. I am beginning the plans for a summer Demo. (It is still in the discussion stage.)
  5. I am working on a scrapbook for display at demos, which gives an overview SCA activities.
  6. Speaking with Owen Flewelling/Lord Llewelyn Ap Olwyn about the possibility of making a short movie/ power point presentation which would give an overview of the different activities of the Shire. Lord Llewelyn is also actively recruiting those interested in the heavy fighting aspect of the SCA and is collecting maintaining loaner armour so that they can participate immediately after going through the safety rules.
  7. Disscussions (with Senechal and other members) of potential avenues where we can meet with the public and increase public awareness (ie. Combine a demo with a foodbank drive).

Subject: Shire of Lyndhaven MOAS report

Greetings Lady Joane and Mistress Danabren!

I wish to report to you that our shire seems to be forgetful and, to this date, I have not received any information from anyone on any projects. I do understand, however, that Master Aetheric is currently doing scrolls, as well as coaching his apprentice, Inga Torgansdottir with the same art. I am also putting together a few projects of late Italian Ren. gowns. A few of our members in the Fredericton/Oromocto/Gagetown area are getting together on Friday evenings for A&S nights, and I have only heard of Lady Mergriet in Moncton that is doing anything on the A&S end.

This having been my first report as Shire MoAS, I'm sure that it will take some time for the populace to switch over to sending their project info to me.

So, I will end in saying that I look forward to working in this position for the next 2 yrs, and I hope to boost our shire's passion for the arts, and joy that goes into the creation of SOMEthing.

18 Nov 2006: Lyndhaven - minutes of meeting 10 Nov 06

There was no meeting held on 10 Nov 06. It was just a discussion. Isard reports these notes from that discussion:

Greetings unto the farflung populace of Lyndhaven from Lord Isard,

Having had the good fortune to live only minutes away from the rcent populace meeting I would like to share with those who we not able to attend a genral account of what was discussed. These are in no way official minutes, and in any case the meeting consisted largely of brainstorming. These are just my personal notes that I hope might further the discussion at the next populous meeetings where hopefully folks will come to some concensus.

In attendance was Master Henry, mylelf Lord Isard, Doccia (webminister), Cat, another lady whos name ludes me, Joe, and later on Liz joined the fray. Not a large meeting by any means but the locals we there.

Our wise and distingushed senechal Master Henry oppened the meeting, expressing a desire to meet with as many of the populace to discuss solutions and perspectives on the challenges currently facing our humble shire.

At present he sees two key issues that need to be resolved before the shire can start rolling easily and quickly towards the glorious future that is our do. The first being that as it stands it would seem that the existing lyndhaven governing documents are holding the shire back, and preventing rather than enabling the group to get anything done. The scond key issue in the eyes of Master Henry is that in rushing towards the idea of chopping the shire into cantons and creating a barony we would in fact be creating a very big mess. In any case we are no where close to having out shire sorted out enough to talk about barony. Other solutions are needed to get over the distance barrier.

Other points ar as follows in point form:

Henry ammended:

The second key issue in my eyes is the distance issue. We're spread out across a lot of space (roughly a 300km corridor) and this makes it difficult for us to meet, physically, and to get together as a group on a regular enough basis to maintain a cohesive group identity.

Issues one and two (policies that don't serve and distance) have combined with the labour issues of the early 21st century (jobs that include Saturday work, low wages, schedules that aren't given until the last minute) and the result is that folks are groping around for ways to deal with 'em.

One of the ideas that has surfaced is to become a Barony just so that we could scissor it up into Cantons.

I feel that if we want to become a Barony, it should be because we want the extra colour that it would add to our game. While I understand the needs that it is trying to address, I feel very strongly that dividing up into Cantons would be wrong for us.

At the meeting last Saturday, several good ideas were floated on how to deal with the distance issue. I intend to go talk with the folks in Moncton and the folks in Woodstock. Somewhere in all out people I'm sure we'll find ideas to address our problems that provide a solution without adding a burden.

ANY ADDITIONAL NOTES, COMMENTS, CONCERNS, CHANGES, ETC.:

Comments:

I've included one non-SCA event in my event list. This event was put on by the Medieval Anachronists Club at CFB Gagetown, which is a club organized on the base to allow SCA to have access to its facilities. The event was open to all SCA people, not just MAC club members. No SCA funds were used.

Concerns:

It's turning out to be a challenge getting the officers to meet. This challenge has been a problem in Lyndhaven for some time, now, and I'm unaware of the time/date of the most recent officer or populous meeting. I'm going to try to see what I can do to streamline things so that business can take place without the need to physically meet yet allow for the voices of our participants to be heard.

Another possible concern is that we are a geographically dispersed branch and all of the current officers are from the Western side of the Shire, but a very large proportion of our membership is from the Eastern side. I foresee this as a possible issue that needs pre-emptive action to ensure that the people in the Eastern side of the Shire do not feel abandoned or ignored.
